Minimize Energy Loss in HVAC Duct Work – St. Louis HVAC

December 21, 2012

We are dedicated to providing you with the highest quality and most energy-efficient heating systems. Many duct systems lose a considerable amount of energy due to leakage and poor insulation. It is estimated that leaky ductwork can lose 20-40% of heating energy. This results in higher energy bills, inconsistent heating of the rooms in your home, and poor indoor air quality. However, changes and updates to your heating and cooling air ducts can reduce heat loss in your HVAC system. When duct systems are well-designed and efficient, they distribute air properly and keep air from leaking. However, even ducts that are properly sealed and insulated can still lose some heat. In newer energy-efficient homes, the air duct systems are being placed within the conditioned space of the home. There are many types of supply duct configurations. No matter where they are placed, air ducts need to be well sealed. Duct System Maintenance In some cases, it is just a matter of making sure furniture is not blocking the airflow through the registers. You may also try vacuuming the registers in case dust has built up in them. However, simple maintenance may not be enough. Rooms that lack sufficient airflow may need new air...

December 19, 2012

Making sure your furnace is working properly this winter is essential for the safety, health and comfort of your family. Scott-Lee Heating wants to help you winterize your home so you are prepared for this winter that is coming fast upon us. This is the best time to think about getting your home ready for these coming months. Here are some tips on winterizing your home: Furnace Inspection: By keeping your furnace and ducks clean, this will help keep your monthly payment down and will keep flammable materials from your furnace area. Buying new filters and changing them monthly will keep dust out of your furnace area. Fireplace: Making sure the cap/screen is correctly on the top of your chimney, and sweeping your chimney will save yourself from more work later on. Inspecting your fireplace is very important as well. Doors and Windows: Inspecting the exposed areas of your house and making sure all cracks are covered so cold air will not enter and your heat will not escape. Keep in mind any cracks that may be in windows and doors, should be replaced too to help keep the weather out. Inspect roofs and gutters and foundation: Keeping gutters up...

Improve Indoor Air Quality with Whole-House Humidifier

November 30, 2012

Humidifiers control moisture to increase the indoor air quality of your home or business. Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor that is in the atmosphere. A humidifier is a device that increases the humidity level in your home.  Humidifiers usually become more necessary in the winter months because humidity levels drop and heating systems dry out the air. Ideal Humidity Levels The ideal level of indoor humidity is between 30 and 50 percent. When the air in your home is dry, it will act like a sponge that soaks up the moisture in the atmosphere. When this happens your skin and lips become dry. Even your wood floors and other furnishings in your home are adversely affected. Humidifiers control moisture to increase the indoor air quality of your home or business. Whole-house humidifiers are available, which connect to a home’s HVAC system to provide humidity to the entire house. Benefits of a Humidifier Consider some of the benefits of having a humidifier installed in your home or business. Increase your home’s comfort level. Reduce your heating bills since humidified air feels warmer. Soothe dry skin conditions. Ease asthma and other respiratory conditions. Help reduce cold, flu, and allergy symptoms. Prevent peeling of wallpaper or cracking...

St. Louis HVAC Professional Explains How Heat Pumps Work

November 1, 2012

How Heat Pumps Work Heat pumps use two to three times less energy to produce hot or cool air. The term ‘heat pump’ can be misleading. Do heat pumps only serve one purpose? The answer is no. Heat pumps serve a double purpose in your home or business. Heat pumps have been found to be more energy efficient than the standard air conditioner or furnace. This is because heat pumps do not use fossil fuels to convert heat. When a heat pump is in use during the cold-weather season, it extracts outdoor heat and moves it inside your home. It uses a small amount of energy to move heat from one place to another. Heat pumps provide cool air, like an air conditioner, on warm days. However, during cold days, a heat pump reverses its refrigerant flow to provide warm air. Because a heat pump works in this way, it uses two to three times less energy than it produces in hot or cool air. Heat Pump Installation If you are interested in having a heat pump installed in your home or business, or have any questions regarding heat pumps, call Scott-Lee Heating Company today. Our St. Louis HVAC technician will be happy to...

Department of Energy Sets Out New Energy Standards

October 10, 2012

Residential Heating and Cooling In October of 2011 the US Department of Energy (DOE) announced the effective date of the proposed energy conservation rules which impose elevated minimum standards and regional standards for residential HVAC appliances. These new proposed standards are set to take effect in May of 2013 for residential non-weatherized furnaces. The new standards for residential weatherized furnaces, central air conditioners and heat pumps will go into effect January 2015. The new rules for non-weatherized residential furnaces and mobile home gas furnaces are set for those that are installed on or after May 1, 2013. In the Northern Region of the United States, the new rules set out that they must be at least 90% AFUE. In all other states, they must be at least 80% AFUE. In the Southeastern region of the United States, split system air conditioners must be a minimum of 14 SEER when installed after the beginning of January 2015. In the Southwestern Region, they must be at a minimum of 14 SEER and 12.2 EER. All other states must be at a minimum of 13 SEER. For heat pumps the minimum efficiency standard is 14 SEER and 8.2 HSPF which begins January 1,...
