The city that is known today as Brentwood, consists of three land purchases in the early 1800’s: that of Louis J. Bompart, that of the Gay family, and that of the Marshall family. He constructed a tavern, a barbershop, a grocery store, and a blacksmith shop and also operated a rock quarry. Because of his prominence in the community the town was then named Maddenville.
